RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO (October 13, 2014) - In preparation for the spring 2015 opening of Hyatt Playa del Carmen in Riviera Maya, Mexico, Juan Mercadante has been named the General Manager of the highly anticipated hotel.  Mercadante, an experienced manager at Hyatt hotels and native to Mexico, will oversee the hotel’s operations and strategy as well as integrating the hotel into the Riviera Maya community.  Situated in the heart of Playa del Carmen, Hyatt Playa del Carmen will be the first Hyatt-branded hotel to open in Mexico and in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

“I am honored to have been chosen as an integral part of Hyatt Playa del Carmen’s opening. The hotel’s location, accessibility and services will be a perfect addition to the area,” said Mercadante. “I look forward to carrying out Hyatt’s vision in providing guests with an exceptional, unforgettable experience that is characteristic of this culturally rich destination.”

With more than 21 years of experience in the hotel industry, Mercadante’s career began in 1992 as a front desk clerk for the then-Hyatt Regency Cancun. Since his time in Cancun, he has expanded his expertise to focus on Hyatt hotel locations outside the U.S., including Kazakhstan, London, Dubai and Mexico City.

“Juan’s extensive experience with Hyatt and his expertise in the luxury and upscale market make him extremely well-suited to debut our first Hyatt brand hotel resort in Mexico,” said Kurt Straub, Area Vice President of Mexico for Hyatt.  “The opening of this hotel represents our desire to grow this brand in a thoughtful and meaningful way and build brand presence in places where we know our guests are traveling, and we’re thrilled to add another Hyatt brand to our Mexico and Latin America and Caribbean portfolio.”

This resort hotel will be one of the only non-all-inclusive hotels in the vibrant city to offer innovative culinary options and a full-service spa facility accessible to both in-house and external guests. Its central location directly on Mamitas Beach and within walking distance to the famous La Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) will allow guests to be just steps away from all that Playa del Carmen has to offer. With two on-site restaurants, featuring authentic locally inspired food and beverage concepts, Hyatt Playa del Carmen is poised to become one of the hottest hotels in the area.
